2012 Annual Meeting![]() Hello BMCR Members,
Here is information to help you plan for the 45th Annual BMCR Meeting. You will have to plan quickly because we are meeting a full month earlier than usual and that means the registration deadlines come earlier.
This annual meeting emphasizes recruiting and retaining young leaders for mission and ministry and preparations and strategies for the 2012 General Conference.
The Program Committee wanted you to have more than a good feeling about this upcoming annual meeting. We want you to have something concrete to use in your local settings. If that doesn’t happen, then we’ve failed.
The fact that young people are not among many of our congregations is a staggering indictment and we don’t intend to take that lying down. The first plenary session covers how to recruit and retain young black clergy. Young adults are a great part of this meeting and of BMCR ministries. Thursday’s workshops also focus on young adults as will Friday’s plenary session.
Another aim of this meeting is to get on target with our efforts for the 2012 General Conference and beyond. Something new: we are offering all endorsed Episcopal candidates the opportunity to meet and converse with our members. Thursday morning will be devoted to a listening session from the candidates who choose to meet with BMCR members. The General Conference Observers/Monitors will participate in two 3-hour training sessions and jurisdictional meetings will focus on connecting with jurisdictional and general conference delegates.
Thursday afternoon is an emphasis on specific challenges that face the young people and the black church. Workshops will be offered to help you examine issues like the plight of young black men, the challenges of young black women, healthcare disparities, and how churches can navigate social media.
We’ve planned opportunity for you to check out Las Vegas, with a free evening on Thursday, and an early evening on Friday. We’ll have our usual banquet, but with a twist! Thanks for including this important meeting in your plans. Watch the website (www.bmcrumc.org) for updates and more information.
What happens in Vegas won’t stay in Vegas! And we mean it! Don’t sit on it! Take good news, great ideas, effective resources, action plans and real spiritual food with you when you leave!
