Re: Invitation to the 60th Anniversary of the March on Washington

Date: 16 August 2023

Time Sensitive Reminder: BMCR invites you to support the Saturday, August 26, 2023 March on Washington events.

On August 28, 1963 from the steps of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, DC, the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. delivered his famous “I Have a Dream” speech. In his speech, Reverend King called for civil and economic rights as well as the end of racism in the United States of America. Reverend King, joined by other Civil Rights leaders, had assembled in DC for the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom. As a result of this March, the Civil Rights Act of 1964 was passed that prohibited discrimination based upon race, color, religion, sex or national origin.

Sixty years later, while much has been accomplished and can be celebrated, the struggle continues for people of color in the United States of America. On Saturday, August 26, 2023 in the Nation’s Capital, Washington, DC, people from all over the country will gather again to be reminded that the Reverend King’s work hasn’t ended. This year’s theme for the March is “Not a Commemoration. A Continuation.”

Black Methodists for Church Renewal (BMCR) is proud to be a sponsor and to join with the National Action Network in lifting up and supporting this historic event. The schedule of the March on Washington Events is:

  • 9-11am Pre-program Events and Staging begin

  • 11-1 Main March on Washington program

  • 1-2:30 Attendees march to the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Statue.

  • 3pm March Activities conclude

It’s not too late to consider participating with your presence, prayers or financial gift. Also, you can come to DC to help as a support person or volunteer. Go to https://www.mow2023.com, to find additional information on how you can be counted in the number of those wanting to make and see a difference in our nation.

Thank you for your time, attention and consideration of this announcement.
