Statement for BMCR regarding Recent Violent Attacks in Texas and Ohio

BMCR, Black Methodists for Church Renewal, Inc., stands in support of the families and leaders of Dayton and El Paso as they find new ways of being amidst the horrific and avoidable shootings that wreaked havoc on their communities.

We are alarmed at the rate of hate and investments in violence that are perpetuated within the culture of the United States. It is equally alarming that our United Methodist Church is not a place of safety and security for all God’s children. BMCR shares this because we are to “act as an agitating conscience on all boards and agencies of The United Methodist Church in order to keep them sensitive to the needs and expressions of a “genuine” inclusive and relevant Church.” Violence through word and deed are unacceptable.

BMCR will continue doing its mission of “raising up prophetic and spiritual leaders…” because the nation and the church needs a liberative voice and healing presence. In that vein, we join with MARCHA, Methodist Associated Representing the Cause of Hispanic Americans, and call on the General Conference of The United Methodist Church to unequivocally denounce the evil of White Supremacy and declare it incompatible with Christian teachings.

While many pray and think, let it be known that nothing less than a full denouncement by the UMC will begin to satisfy our longings for a fully inclusive and nonviolent existence within and beyond the church. May our work bring about community amidst this chaos.
